The Chorus

The Zeeland Civic Chorus is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1939 for the sole purpose of presenting the renowned Christmas tradition of G.F. Handel’s The Messiah.  The Messiah presentation is scheduled each year early in the advent season as part of a community-wide preparation for the Christmas season. (For many years, all of the Zeeland merchants closed their businesses at six o’clock on the night of the concert so that all could attend.)

The Chorus is made up entirely of non-professional singers from all walks of life who love to sing this wonderful choral work of art.  Every year we welcome new members to join us and have maintained an approximate 100-voice chorus for many years.  We begin rehearsing in October and have a total of 8 consecutive Sunday afternoon rehearsals.  A separate dress rehearsal is held for each performance, following the 8 Sunday rehearsals.

The Chorus is supported by dues paid by the member singers and by patrons that are contacted each year by a patron committee. There is a free will offering that is taken at each performance but no tickets are sold. We are committed to a Free Admission Program.

Each year a Board of Directors is selected to over see the functions of the Chorus. They meet periodically during the year and make decisions necessary for the operation of the Chorus.

Mission Statement:

The Zeeland Civic Chorus unites our community through the annual rehearsal and heartfelt performances of Handel’s Messiah. We provide an opportunity for individuals of all levels of experience, fostering unity and glorifying God through music. Together, we celebrate the profound impact of Handel’s masterpiece, leaving a lasting cultural legacy in West Michigan.
